Commitment to Public Health

Hologic’s contributions to the fight against COVID-19 extend our decades of innovation toward improving public health through early detection.

Our molecular diagnostic test received fast-tracked approval from the FDA in March and was the first COVID-19 product selected for streamlined development through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA).

Both the Panther Fusion SARS-CoV-2 Assay and Aptima® SARS-CoV-2 assay received authorization for testing of individuals without symptoms or other reasons to suspect COVID-19 infection. Our assays were the first widely available, high-throughput molecular diagnostic tests specifically authorized for screening asymptomatic people. This availability is expected to play a key role in identifying early infection in exposed individuals, as well as reopening schools, workplaces and the economy in general.

Commitment to Patient Education

Decreasing screening disparities

Last month, Hologic announced a multi-year commitment to decreasing breast cancer screening disparities for Black women in partnership with the Black Women’s Health Imperative (BWHI), the only nonprofit organization dedicated solely to improving the health and wellness of Black women and girls, and RAD-AID, a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring equal access to radiology health services for medically underserved communities.

The multi-pronged initiative includes BWHI’s P.O.W.E.R. of Sure campaign, a nation wide effort that will examine common barriers to early screening and encourage Black women to schedule and attend their annual mammogramsat facilities across the country. The campaign features Grammy award winning, Oscar and Golden Globe nominated artist Mary J. Blige and a multimedia digital hub with resources including common facts and myths about mammography, frequently asked questions regarding breast cancer and screening guidelines, a list of locations offering breast cancer screening, and information about what to expect when getting a mammogram during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Getting Women Back to Screening

As the start of the pandemic, appointments for breast, cervical and colorectal screenings in March were understandably down 86% to 94% compared to previous years.

As many customers started to reopen safely, Hologic launched the Back to Screening campaign to encourage patients to sign up for a reminder to schedule their annual mammograms. By signing up to receive reminders for scheduling annual and routine screening appointments, patients were given the opportunity to enter a sweepstakes to win tickets to a private, virtual performance by nine-time GRAMMY® Award winner and breast cancer survivor Sheryl Crow, who has served as the spokesperson for Hologic’s Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exam for nearly five years.
